recovery
There are things you only learn once you’ve gotten older.
That recovery speed changes with age. That things which used to be a given, no longer are.
At first, I took this as loss. What used to take a day to recover from now takes two, sometimes three. I kept catching myself longing for my old pace, my old body.
But then it occurred to me.
I need to hold onto both the blessing given to me now, and the treasure that was given to me before.
The treasures of the past aren’t memories meant to fuel regret over what’s gone now. They were gifts given to me at that time — something to be grateful for, simply as they were.
And right now, I’m standing in the middle of another treasure. I just haven’t found it yet.
There’s a treasure hidden even in this slower recovery. Learning to listen more carefully to my body. Each day mattering more than it used to. And the simple fact that I can still run at all.
What I need isn’t the strength to go back to how things were — it’s the wisdom to find and be grateful for what’s here, right now.
