A Heart That Isn’t Afraid to Try

Isn't Afraid to Try

Isn't Afraid to Try

When you’re young, you trick yourself into believing your body is limitless.

No matter how hard you run today, you feel light again tomorrow. Yesterday’s overexertion doesn’t hold your ankle back the next morning. That’s a privilege only youth allows.

Speed is part of it too. Your heart races without fear, your lungs expand without hesitation. There’s a stretch of life where you can just run flat out, wherever your legs take you, without wondering if you’ll get hurt.

Your body adapting quickly to new stimulus is part of it as well. A distance you’ve never run before today — give it a few days, and your body simply absorbs it.

But I found something more important than any of that.

It wasn’t something my body could do. It was a certain mindset my body ended up building in me.

The day I ran my first 5K, my legs were shaking, but I finished. Same with my first 10K. Same with my first half marathon. Every time, I started with the same fear — can I actually do this? — and every time, I did.

And as those experiences added up, I came to understand something. Fear isn’t a sign you’re about to fail — it’s just the natural feeling anyone has standing in front of something new. And if you carry that fear and take the first step anyway, your body figures it out. It adapts. It gets you there.

That’s the real treasure running gave me. Standing in front of a new distance, a new challenge — and not being as afraid as I used to be.

Now, even in front of things I’ve never tried before, I think this:

“Never having done it before isn’t a reason I can’t. I just have to carry the fear and start anyway. Running taught me that.”

The things a young body can do will eventually change. But this mindset — stepping forward even in the presence of fear — once it’s built, it stays.

So right now, through running, I hope you build that mindset too. Whatever you go on to try, may you carry a heart that isn’t afraid.
